ESL instruction focuses around 4 domains: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The following are examples of skills we work on in class.
Listening
follows multi-step directions
understands wh- questions [who, what, where, when, why]
listens actively to lessons and read alouds
classifies objects according to descriptive statements
understands idioms and words with multiple meanings
Speaking
speaks using single words, phrases, complex sentences
speaks using content specific words
speaks with multiple, organized sentences in academic and social situations
Reading
reads grade level or "just right" text
reads several genres
matches phrases to pictures
reads and understands content vocabulary
Writing
writes to a specific audience on topic
writes using content specific vocabulary or a word bank
writes with multiple, organized sentences
writes using a variety of grammatical structures
