What's Happening Now?
Limit the amount of time your child spends on electronics. [tv, ipad, laptop]
Establish a time to read together everyday.
Visit the library and pick out new books.
When you read together, ask questions, read for comprehension.
Ask “What do you think will happen next?”
Draw a picture after a story is read.
Write simple sentences about a story that was just read.
Slow down and take your time when reading.
Ask your child how to say a word in your native language as well as in English.
Have your child go outside and play. Run, play games, encourage cooperative play and taking turns.
Read books that interest your child and expand their vocabulary.
Practice identifying letters and saying the sounds of the letters.
Allow your child to use their imagination. Have them tell you a story using the pictures in a book if they cannot read the words.
Teach them common sight words they frequently see [is, are, they, what, etc.] These can be found on the sight word lists page.
